Hello there, and welcome to day two of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks blog tour! I'm super excited to say that I have a block in the volume five issue, hitting newsstands any day now. If this is your first time stopping by my blog, welcome!
My block is in some wonderful company in this issue, alongside fabulous blocks from some of my super talented friends Lee, Faith, Katie, and Melissa. You can find my block, #457, on page 52.
My block is called Beautiful Math and consists of four plus signs, with one singular background fabric. I used some of my favorite fabrics from Anna Maria Horner's out of print Good Folks collection for my block in the magazine. You can do some really fun things with this block, depending on how you place your color selections. Here's a couple of fun ideas...
You can make your blocks totally scrappy, using four different colors for your pluses...
You can choose a handful of colors and create a cool staggered, stair-step look...
Or you can stick with just two colors, and create something really striking...
I spent a little time this weekend starting on a mini-quilt featuring my block in a color scheme that I've been meaning to try for a long time - black, lime, and fuschia. I haven't finished it just yet - I have a sneaking suspicion this might turn into a larger quilt, as I'm really enjoying these colors together!

I've been borrowing Modern quilt books from the library and devouring them...I am in a Bee through my local modern quilt guild and my month is June...and I'm freaking because I can't seem to make up my mind what block I want...
Although I read it many years ago, I remember loving the book "It's Not About the Bike" by Lance Armstrong.

I read the Hunger Games books in three days. Could not put them down. Congrats on the block.
I'm currently reading Gifts From The Sea. It's a classic, but still relevant today. Beautiful read. (I'm also in the middle of the Hunger Games series, but you've probably heard of that!)
Love the block... am reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King...although quite long, it's a fast read. Not a horror either!!

I recently read the Hunger Games series which I enjoyed. My all time fav book though is "A Fine Balance".

I recently finished the latest in the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, called Elegy for Eddie. Do you know this series? It's a nice mix of historical fiction and mystery. I love a strong, independent woman as the hero! Thanks for the chance at the give away.
This would be a real fun block in children's prints , thanks for sharing. A recent favorite read was "The Secet Garden " if you have not read it I would highly recommend it.
I enjoy the Robin Carr series since they are set in my old stopming grounds and I just read the latest release in the Virgin River set.

Hello Elizabeth - Love your block and your blog. I have 2 sons, although they're not 3 anymore (boo!)(17/13) Anyway - my middle name is Elizabeth. LOVE IT... My Mom always wanted people to call me Terribeth - SOOOO glad that didn't stick! Anyway, I just finished reading "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. True story of a WWII POW and survivor. AMAZING - must read. So well written. Such a phenomenal testament to the true power of the human spirit and God's providence and protection. I hope you find time for it.

What an awesome block. I recently read Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. I had seen the mini-series a couple of years ago, but reading the book fills in a lot of the blanks :-)
I love that you called it Beautiful Math! The original Good Folks version is gorgeous, of course, but the black/lime/fuscia combo is SO awesome! I love love love it!!!

I've been dipping into the classics lately. I just read the Princess of Mars by Edgar Burroughs. I was reading it before I realized the John Carter Movie was about what I was reading. I LOVED the movie. Sorry to see it was panned so badly..I would have liked to see sequels.
Love the math block...and the colors. I read "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein. Story told from the dogs point of view.

Gosh, I'm not one to read much at all. I've never been a fan of reading for some reason. Cookbooks I'll read like novels though. haha The only book I've read recently was a quilting book called "The Handbook of Quilting" by Sally Milner Publishing.
Congrats on the block - nice to see so many ways to use it. And my most recent book is "A Life of Being, Having, and Doing Enough" by Wayne Muller. Inspiring look at daily life.
I've recently read the book by the Bloggess, Jenny Lawson, titled "Let's Pretend This Never Really Happened" and it is absolutely hysterical. I highly recommend it!

How exciting!!! I picked up "The invention of Hugo Cabret" at the library yesterday and have already read half of it. So interesting and compelling and I love the illustrations that drive the story. Thanks for the chance.

The best book I've read this year is "When She Woke" by Hillary Jordan. I really loved it, but it does involve an inflammatory topic so maybe check it out on Amazon to make sure it's your cup of tea first...

I'm reading a very non-quilty book The Path Between the Seas about the Panama Canal. I like the clean lines and the design possibilities of your block. congrats on being included in the magazine.
This is a neat block with so many possibilities for arranging in different ways.
A quilt book I would recommend is Quilting the Quilts by Lee Cleland where she makes each quilt 5 times identically except for the quilting design. It's fascinating to see how the different ways of quilting change the look of the finished quilt.

I've just read Georgia O'Keeffe, An American Perspective by Lauris Morgan-Griffths. Great pics & interesting story of this great artist.
Traveling with Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd is one of my all-time favorite reads! It's a book of value whether you are a mother or a daughter. Well worth the time.

This is a perfect block for my husband the mathematician! The best book I've read recently is Folk, This Ain't Normal by Joel Salatin.
I enjoyed reading the Pilgrim, but it's not for the faint of heart.
The book looks exciting. I've just finished s thriller by katherinr Webb called the Legacy, a really good read.

I just got the Sublime Stitching embroidery book and I love it!
Love your block! Gotta say that my favorite part of quilting is the math part of it. I find myself doing calculations while in line at the grocery store or the bank. The book that I just finished is Water for Elephants! Great book!

As for a recent read? I liked "My Name is Mary Sutter" pretty well. I've really been just browsing through cookbooks when I have reading time. That's my other obsession.
I've been having trouble finding good books lately... but I know the second Divergent book comes out today, and I'm sure it will be awesome!

Just started the Game of Thrones books and they are wonderful! We recently went on a road trip and I hand stitched a quilt binding while we listed to it as a book on tape (well MP3 lol)

Your block is fantastic. I like reading crime novels (though not too gruesome) and I've just found Ellie Griffiths - crimes on the Nort Norfolk Coast! And at 27 years old I still love Enid Blyton! Especialy Mallory Towers at the moment :)
Just finished A Measure of Mercy by Laurene Snelling. A great depiction of life in a Norwegian community in North Dakota in 1903. And of course the ladies of the community made quilts, even used sewing machines!
I'm currently reading "A Thread of Truth" by Marie Bostwick. It is a vey good book. I like your block and all of the options you've shown on how it would look in a quilt. I really like your pattern "Fabricland" as well. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this magazine.

I recently bought a book while on the Maine Shop Hop for the month of April. It is stained Glass Quilts Made Easy by Amy Whalen Helmkamp. I can't wait to try some of her patterns. I think these will make great Christmas gifts. Love your squares. Very colorful and fun.

Elizabeth, I like the clever name Beautiful Math that you've come up with. I wondered what I'd be in store for as I began to scroll down. Nice design. I like it in the solid bright colors in one of your color suggestions. Fabricland interests me. The cover quilt with the purple really draws me in. My latest read is the cooking magazine Clean Eating. We love just about every recipe we've tried (and there has been a bunch). Look at you with a block in a magazine, congratulations! I had to enter this giveaway because I'm still wanting Fabricland and still haven't actually bought it. You know how it is, so many things to start on and just not enough time to get to them! I'm currently re-reading the Twilight series. Yes, I'm a 33 year old Twilight fan. The other book I'm currently working on is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. You've probably already gotten this recommendation in the comments but if you haven't, and you haven't heard of it, you should totally check the series out. It is really good! This is my second time reading through it and it's no small feat because the shortest book in the series is over 600 pages.

If you like historical fiction that involves a murder investigation - you HAVE to read An Instance at the Fingerpost by Iain Pears. After I read that book I bought six copies and gave it to my friends & family!
I am currently reading "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and it's hilarious. :) For quilting books, I just received a copy of "Denyse Schmidt Modern Quilts Traditional Inspiration" and it is one of the best creative books I have read in a while. Grats on having your block published. As for reading I won "The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt" in March and it has some interesting info along with the blocks.
I just finished a book and its sequel about the life of Charlotte Bronte and her sisters. If you are a Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights fan, I recommend these to you: "Dark Quartet" and "Path to the Silent Country" by Lynne Reid Banks.
BTW, I like your block...my daughter would NEVER consider math to be beautiful, no matter what kind of gorgeous fabric you chose!

Wonderful patterns. I'm reading Game of Thrones. The books are better of course than the HBO series but the series follows it fairly well (my imagination is perhaps more censored ;^)
Your block has so many possibilities! My favorite blocks are pieced blocks and yours is stunning with dark colors and happy with brights!! I just received my Gregg Allman book in the mail today-My Cross to Bear-and I can't wait to read it! Tell all book about his life with the Allman Brothers Band!

You should definitley read 'The Homecoming of Samuel Lake' by Jenny Wingfield. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a cracking read with a great plot.

As to books, my favorite pastime, I just finished an short novel "Soul and Shadow", part mystery, part psychic, with ancient Egyptian history, and a cat called Cleocatra! Light, fun reading...
My DD & I have gotten a big kick out of "Suck Your Stomach in and Put Some Color on!: What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters that the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too" by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson It's a great road trip read...she's driving me these days.

Awesome block and your patterns are great. I have not been reading much of late - lots of rereading old favorites. I inherited Mom's copy of Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodweis (to sit on the shelf next to the copy she gave me because i borrowed hers so often) - reading it keeps her close!

Just lately, I have been drawn to cross and straight-line design quilts. Great job! My favorite book lately is "Prairie Children and Their Quilts" by Kathleen Tracy.

I just finished reading "The Help". I really liked it.
Wow, I am having a brain meltdown...I left my favorite book three hours away, via car, from here today. To add to the brain-blankness is I think the title is "the Host" (maybe) and is by Stephanie Meyer (author of the Twilight series) This super book is now being made into a movie. Main character is a young woman, ha! Just like 'we' great quilters.

Wow! What a great block with lots of possiblilities. I see other people have said that but seriously that was my first thought. I have lots of favorite books but one that I read recently that I really liked was by Julie Lessman. It was the first book in her Daugters of Boston series called A Passion Most Pure.

I have just discovered Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries and I am reading my second book in the series. Your block looks great when put together with the mixed colors. It really comes together nicely.

What a fun block! I recently enjoyed Defending Jacob by William Landay. It's a well-paced book with a good twist. But his other two books did nothing for me.

I love your block. Math was my favorite subject in school, so I also love the title! I havne't read much lately, but I did read "The Help" last summer and enjoyed it immensely. I also read "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" recently and enjoyed it even though it was not what I had expected it to be.

Don't call me "Claudee", it is Claudia. I can understand about the Betsy. Wonder how my truck feels about being "Nissie"? A recent book I couldn't put down was "River God" by Wilbur Smith. Published in 1993 and first of a series on ancient Egypt. I ordered the rest of the series.
My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. I can read that one over and over and over again.
